Vatho Building Project

Twenty Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) students, grades 9th through 12, were invited to gain valuable experience and insight building a traditional vatho from the ground up.
The goals of the activity were simple. First, comprehend the various materials and methods used in Vatho construction. At the same time, understanding the cultural significance of Vathos within the greater Gila River Indian Community. Then have fun, enjoying the hands-on experience and fellowship that comes from shared labor, while walking in the steps of past generations in their quest for shade.
What follows is a photographic record of the students with the aid of cultural specialist and mentor Andrew Pedro, building three traditional Vathos on the Skyline Gila River High School playfield.
