2022 Chief Antonio Azul Awards

Chief Antonio Azul “Mavith Kavdom” (Lion Shield) was born 1817. Azul was the last Head-Chief of the Akimel O’otham. He always wanted what was best for his people. During battles he would unite with the Pee-Posh (Maricopa) and often led his army to victory. Under his leadership he was able to keep the tribe in its own traditional territory, rather than being relocated to Oklahoma. Chief Antonio Azul died on October 1, 1909.
